Ricardo Vila Nova
Founder of Ricardo Vila Nova
Often referred to as the “Hair Whisperer,” Ricardo Vila Nova has built an international reputation in advanced hair health and trichology. Working at the intersection of science, performance, and aesthetics, his approach goes far beyond traditional haircare, focusing on scalp health, cellular regeneration, and long-term results.
Through his research-driven method and clinical treatments, Ricardo has positioned himself as a pioneer in redefining how we understand hair: not as a cosmetic concern, but as a biological system connected to overall well-being. We spoke with him about innovation, precision, and the future of hair health.
◆ To begin, could you introduce yourself and explain how you became known as the “Hair Whisperer”?
I am the founder of Ricardo Vila Nova and Head Trichologist of the brand, which I created in 2009, inspired by my passion for developing hair treatment regimes with the same philosophy as skincare.
From the beginning, my ambition was to create truly personalised hair care. This required an obsessive focus on diagnostic precision, which ultimately became one of the defining aspects of my work. Over time, this led to the distinction of being called “The Hair Whisperer,” because of the extraordinary level of information I could extract from analysing a single strand of hair.
State-of-the-art technology, combined with an uncompromising dedication to haircare, became a true game changer. I began identifying insights related to lifestyle, nutrition, hormonal imbalances, and even genetic predispositions. While this may sometimes sound mystical, it is entirely rooted in science. Hair retains a remarkable record of our internal and external environment – it is, in many ways, a biological archive of our health.
◆ If you had to describe your approach to hair health in just three words, what would they be?
Haircare like skincare.
◆ You often speak about scalp health as the foundation of everything. Why is this so frequently overlooked?
During consultations, most clients focus exclusively on the hair itself – its quality, density, and the fear of losing it. However, the scalp receives significantly less attention, despite being the biological environment where hair is produced.
If we compare this with skincare, the difference is striking. Facial care routines typically involve four to five essential steps: cleansing, toning, targeted treatment, hydration, and protection. In contrast, hair care is often limited to just two or three steps, usually shampoo and conditioner or mask.
The scalp is living tissue. Its pH balance, hydrolipid film, and overall metabolic environment directly influence follicle function, elasticity, and cuticle integrity. When the scalp is inflamed, congested, or imbalanced – whether due to excessive glandular activity, environmental stress, or internal factors – it can accelerate changes such as thinning, breakage, greying, or dryness.
We are now entering a new era where scalp-focused treatments, including advanced scalp therapies and hair spa protocols, are finally addressing this foundational aspect of hair health.
◆ How does your scientific and research-based method differ from traditional cosmetic haircare?
The fundamental difference lies in diagnostic depth and personalisation. My approach is based on detailed analysis supported by advanced technology, allowing us to understand each client’s hair at a biological and structural level.
We consider multiple variables: the natural composition of the hair fibre, scalp health, genetic predispositions, health-related factors, environmental exposure, water composition, and climate.
Our Hair DNA Scan enables the development of highly precise treatment strategies with extensive therapeutic possibilities. Personalisation may involve targeted topical treatments, regenerative medical interventions, and supplementation protocols.
◆ How has Lisbon influenced your entrepreneurial journey and brand positioning?
Although I am originally from Portugal, Ricardo Vila Nova Hair Doctors was created and perfected in the United Kingdom. When I brought the brand back to Portugal ten years ago, there was some uncertainty. However, I also recognised Lisbon’s extraordinary potential as a global destination.
Today, Lisbon plays a vital role in the brand’s evolution. It is a centre for innovation, client experience, and growth, and remains one of our most important and prestigious locations.
◆ Looking ahead, what innovations in trichology or hair science excite you most?
Regenerative medicine and biochemical research are opening entirely new frontiers. We are entering an era defined by biostimulation and metabolic optimisation, where treatments can activate the body’s own regenerative mechanisms to support hair growth and scalp health.
These innovations extend beyond hair – they contribute to overall physiological balance and longevity. This convergence between trichology, regenerative medicine, and metabolic science represents the future.
◆ Could you walk us through your ideal day in Lisbon – from morning routine to evening wind-down?
Lisbon is an incredibly luminous and inspiring city. I like to begin the day with a walk, appreciating its architecture and light. A mandatory stop is always a traditional pastelaria for an espresso and a pastel de nata – Manteigaria and Castro are my temptations.
Lunch often takes place along Avenida da Liberdade or in nearby streets such as Barata Salgueiro, where I enjoy exploring boutique stores and perfumeries like João Rolo and Skinlife.
Sunset is best experienced overlooking the Tagus River or at Seen, which offers one of the city’s most beautiful perspectives. Currently, my favourite dinner is at Canalha. It is so hard to book, but absolutely worth it.

◆ Many people focus on aesthetics rather than biology. How do you educate clients about the deeper causes of hair issues?
Trichology is often only introduced when a problem arises. However, we have observed that clients today are increasingly informed, largely due to greater awareness around active ingredients and scalp health.
Education begins with helping clients understand that hair reflects internal and external balance. Not every treatment or ingredient is suitable for everyone. The priority is always to respect, restore, and optimise the scalp’s natural environment. By teaching clients to recognise the signals of both scalp and hair, we empower them to understand the underlying causes rather than simply treating visible symptoms.
◆ What are the most common misconceptions people have about hair loss or hair health?
One of the most common misconceptions is confusing genetic hair loss with other forms of hair shedding. Many people assume that all hair loss is androgenetic, which leads to the inappropriate use of hormonal treatments. In reality, hair loss can be triggered by numerous non-genetic factors, including hormonal fluctuations, stress, medication, nutritional deficiencies, or immune responses.
Conditions such as postpartum hair loss, medication-related shedding, or deficiency-related hair loss are often temporary and reversible. Treating these cases with aggressive hormonal therapies is unnecessary and sometimes counterproductive.
In many situations, restoring balance within the body – whether through nutritional correction, detoxification, or metabolic support – is sufficient to restore healthy hair growth. The solution is often simpler than people expect.
◆ Your work blends science, innovation, and luxury positioning. How do you balance clinical precision with premium experience?
Hair is the most powerful accessory one can have, and caring for it demands both scientific precision and continuous research. While our work is grounded in clinical expertise, the experience itself should never feel medical or intimidating. Instead, it should feel reassuring, elevated, and deeply personalised.
By combining advanced diagnostics, carefully selected ingredients, and a holistic approach, we create an experience that enhances not only hair health but also emotional well-being. True luxury is precision, understanding, and transformation.
