Founder of Lisbon by Design

Over the last few years, Julie de Halleux has quietly become one of the key figures shaping Lisbon’s contemporary design scene. Through Lisbon by Design, she has created much more than a design fair: a platform celebrating collectible design, craftsmanship, contemporary creation, and the dialogue between Portuguese and international artists, designers, and galleries.

What started as a more intimate initiative has now grown into one of Lisbon’s most anticipated creative events, bringing together a carefully curated community around unique objects, limited pieces, artisanal savoir-faire, and contemporary aesthetics.

As Lisbon by Design enters a new and even more ambitious edition this year, we spoke with Julie about the evolution of the project, the rise of Lisbon as a design destination, and the importance of creating meaningful platforms for contemporary creators.

◆ What inspired you to create Lisbon by Design, and what was your original vision when you first launched the project?

There were so many talented designers and artists in Portugal who were not structured or promoted locally and internationally. At the same time, there was no real platform dedicated to high-end contemporary craft and design. My vision was to create a fair that would showcase this richness and give it visibility.

◆ If you had to describe Lisbon by Design in just three words, what would they be?

Crafted. Curated. Unique.

◆ Over the years, the fair has grown tremendously and become an important event within Lisbon’s creative scene. What do you think has contributed most to its evolution?

The commitment of my team, growing international interest in Portugal and its craftsmanship, a clear vision with strong curation, consistent communication efforts both during the fair and throughout the year, and solid global connections.

◆ What makes Lisbon such an interesting city today for contemporary design, craftsmanship, and collectible pieces?

Its authenticity, the presence of traditional crafts, and how contemporary designers reinterpret these traditions. There is also still a strong community of artists living and working in the city.

◆ One of the things that makes Lisbon by Design so special is its strong curatorial identity. What do you personally look for when selecting artists, designers, and creators?

Authenticity, originality, and diversity. I like to mix established designers with emerging talents. LbD has become a platform and a kind of laboratory, connecting the Portuguese design scene with the international world.

◆ How important is it for you to create dialogue between contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship?

It is essential. Traditional craftsmanship is gradually disappearing, so engaging younger generations is key. This requires placing craft within a contemporary context.

◆ Have you noticed an evolution in the way people collect, consume, and engage with design today?

Yes, definitely. People are moving towards quality and authenticity rather than quantity. They also want a connection with the designer and the story behind each piece. At LbD, artists are present, which allows for direct engagement.

◆ What are some artists, designers, galleries, or creative people currently inspiring you the most?

Those who are deeply committed to high-end craftsmanship and strong ethical and aesthetic values.

◆ As an insider, what are some of your favorite places in Lisbon right now?

The artist studios we visit every month with our LbD studio visit group—they offer a very intimate and inspiring perspective on the creative scene. And most of the venues are just amazing.

◆ Finally, what can people expect from this new edition of Lisbon by Design, and what’s next for the future of the platform?

An extended edition – the largest so far – taking over the entire Palacete Gomes Freire, including two levels, a garden, and a large patio, plus an additional space for a curated group show. Looking ahead, we plan to expand our studio visits and develop new experiences for companies, hotels, and design enthusiasts.
