Julie de Halleux
Founder
Lisbon by Design
With a sharp eye for beauty and a deep love for Portuguese craftsmanship, Julie de Halleux launched Lisbon by Design; an intimate and thoughtfully curated fair celebrating the country’s contemporary design talent. Hosted each spring in a private palace, it has quickly become a must for collectors, architects, and design lovers. We spoke to Julie about how it all began, what sets Portuguese design apart, and her favorite creative corners of the city.
◆ What sparked the idea for Lisbon by Design, and what was missing from the local scene that you felt called to create?
I’ve always loved visiting design and art fairs when traveling, and I felt Lisbon was missing one that truly celebrated what’s made here. I created Lisbon by Design to highlight the incredible craftsmanship and creativity that exists in Portugal—authentic, unique, and worth discovering.
◆ If you had to describe Lisbon by Design in just three words, what would they be?
Crafted in Portugal.
◆ What’s the story behind one piece, studio, or moment from the fair that really moved or surprised you?
Every year, what I love most is the moment when the artists arrive to install their work. There’s a special energy. You see the spaces come alive, and the fair truly begins to take shape. It’s always super exciting.
◆ How do you curate the selection of designers and artists each year? What makes someone a good fit for Lisbon by Design?
I look for authenticity, originality, aesthetics, and a strong link to Portuguese culture or techniques. It’s important that each piece tells a story and brings something new to the table.
◆ In your eyes, what sets Portuguese design apart on the global stage?
It’s deeply connected to nature and tradition, yet always evolving. With a soulful simplicity and respect for materials that make it very special.
◆ Could you walk us through your ideal day in Lisbon, from a beautifully designed breakfast nook to your favorite gallery or concept store?
It starts with a good coffee around Mercado da Ribeira at Cafe Janis, then discovering a talent in a beautiful design studio. Lunch al fresco at Magnolia, followed by a late afternoon yoga session. I would end the day at an art or design opening—always inspiring.
One of my favorite galleries in Lisbon is Made in Situ, founded by Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. More than just a gallery, it is a thoughtful and ambitious project that celebrates and elevates Portuguese craftsmanship and design. And just next door, I love passing by Maison Intègre, another inspiring and ethical design project.
◆ What’s one space in Lisbon, a hotel, restaurant, or private home, whose design you admire and why?
Hotel Santa Clara 1728—it's a small and intimate hotel designed by architect Manuel Aires Mateus, and maybe my favorite in Lisbon. It’s timeless, chic, simple, and minimalistic, the kind of aesthetics I love. Don’t forget I’m Belgian; this quiet elegance really resonates with me.

◆ How do you balance timeless craftsmanship with contemporary vision in the way you curate and grow Lisbon by Design?
By choosing creators who master traditional techniques but aren’t afraid to experiment—respecting the past while pushing boundaries.
◆ What advice would you give to someone hoping to build a meaningful project in Portugal’s creative industry today?
Take your time, build genuine relationships, and stay true to your vision. Authenticity stands out here.
◆ Can you share with us your hidden gem or local hangout?
The garden at Park das Necessidades it's quiet, green, and full of charm. Still very peaceful in hectic Lisbon!
